Ray Lindsay, member of Boy Scout Troop No. 294 of Elk Grove, was named Scout of the Year at the troop's Court of Honor Held Dec. 11.  This award is based on a combination of advancement and camping participation throughout the year.

Twenty-two boys received awards at the ceremony, including nine rank advancements, 32 merit badges and 16 skill awards.  Tai Thornock and Adam Harris received their first class awards, Mark D'Urso his Star Award, and Brent Harris and Lindsay their Life Scout awards.

Overall for 1983 Troop 294 Scouts were awarded 43 rank advancements, 129 merit badges and 75 skill awards.  Members participated in nine overnight campouts including three nights camping in snow caves and a six-day, 111 mile canoe trek down the Sacramento River.  they also attended Camp Pahatsi for a week in August.

The troop accomplished a lot of leadership training in 1983.  Scoutmaster Steve Taff attended "Woodbadge" training and Matt Fox and Ray Lindsay attend "Troop Leadership Training," the boy equivalent of "Woodbadge." The latter consisted of a week-long camping experience, during which the boys received intensive leadership training.  Fox was chosen honorary senior patrol leader for his troop at that time.

The group is looking forward to a busy 1984.  Already on the calendar are the second annual ice cave freezeout, rock climbing at Buck's Bar, exploration of Samwell Cave near Shasta Lake, and a week-long 58 mile back pack trip along the Tri-Trek Trail near Soda Springs followed by a week at Camp Pahatsi.

Troop 294 is sponsored by the Elk Grove 3rd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
